CD Projekt RED has set high expectations for the next chapter of its flagship dark fantasy saga. Ahead of Gamescom, Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed that The Witcher 4 is currently aiming for a 2028 release window. While a precise calendar date remains unconfirmed, the timeline makes one thing immediately clear: fans will need to practice patience.
Addresssing the long road ahead, Nowakowski asked the community for time as development continues. “I know it’s a bit of a wait and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.”
The extended timeline aligns with the project’s massive scope. Nowakowski framed the title as a defining release for the studio, describing it as “our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.” On top of its scale, he promised a “deep, impactful story that we hope will stay with you for a long time.”
While the main entry won’t be playable at Gamescom this year, CD Projekt RED is far from absent. Nowakowski hinted that Gamescom forms a key part of the studio’s strategy for “the coming years,” strongly teasing future appearances for the sequel at upcoming conventions.
In the short term, attention shifts back to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Fans can look forward to Songs of the Past, an expansion slated for release in 2027. The first official trailer debuts at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25th at 11 AM PST. Attendees visiting the CD Projekt RED booth will get a closer look at the expansion, including a “taste of its dark story” alongside new gameplay content.
To cap off the event, Nowakowski encouraged viewers to tune into the official REDstreams broadcasting from August 26th to 30th, hinting that the team may have a “surprise or two” prepared during what promises to be a packed show.
